Kenfig Nature Reserve Pembrokeshire July

My adventures to part of Pembrokeshire my first stop off at Kenfig Nature Reserve. 

Kenfig NNR is a favourite refuge for wildfowl all year round and is one of the few places in the UK where the bittern can be seen during the winter - the area is a very popular place with birdwatchers.

The area is managed to ensure the dunes don't become overcome by dense grassland and scrub woodland which would result in the loss of much of the important and diverse wildlife. The reserve is managed so that the delicate balance of habitats is maintained and visitors can freely wander the area without harming any of the reserve and its features. Disabled access is encouraged yet access to the dune systems is difficult for wheelchair users.

Kenfig NNR (includes the area of sand dunes and Kenfig Pool) are designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI).

There are two paths you can follow through the Dunes. 

The Wales Coastal Path and there own path that is a 3 mile circular walk around the dunes. 

Honeysuckle 

Early Marsh Orchid flower in May and early July. Dune slacks are important areas for these damp loving orchids. 

Kidney vetch plant is where a rare small blue butterfly lays its eggs. 

Burnet Rose a prickly rose is found on sand dunes made stable by vegetation. Their delicate white flowers are best seen in June and early July.

Sea Holly grows to metre long roots of this plant enable it to colonise dry, mobile foredunes. Its spikey grey-green leaves and blue flowers are now a rare sight on the Welsh coast. 

Working on my sock design in beautiful vivid green. When I wear these socks will be extra special knowing the places I have knitted them. 

Rhossili and Wormshead

I have wanted to visit the Gower estuary for a long time and today was the lucky day.  Oh my goodness it did not disappoint!

Rhossili beach is just stunning. I love the little cottage tucked away on the hillside, that must have the most mesmerising views.

As you walk around there are free roaming animals, not sure why they are partly shorn sheep though?

As you walked a short distance you were greeted with the view of Wormshead.

You can walk across, but be warned if you get your timing wrong you'll be on the rock for a long time till the tide subsides!

As you walk around the headland you are very aware of the erosion happening.

The area is surrounded by the most beautiful flowers too. 

We had the most spectacular knitting spot too.

On the way back we stopped off at Arthur's Rock which is an amazing stone on top of the moorland and the views are spectacular.
